Close encounters: quantifying the power of collaborative innovation

Overview

Collaborative innovation, in the form of partnerships with dynamic SMEs, has emerged as a key strategy for corporate innovation. This study aims to quantify collaborative deals between UK SMEs and domestic and international corporates and reveal how firms are choosing to collaborate.


In the last twelve months, large organisations invested £21bn in more than 1,100 collaborative deals with SMEs in the UK. This significantly exceeds the £16bn large businesses spent on UK R&D in 2016 - making collaborative innovation a vital corporate strategy.


This report investigates the drivers behind these numbers, as well as examining the substantial fall in deal volumes since the EU referendum and implications for innovation in the UK and beyond.
